I'll keep updating this journal as I get ready for my big trip next year.

Day 5 54 miles Total miles 343

When we looked at the weather channel this morning and saw we would start out on a 37 degree day, but Grand Rapids had lots of snow… We were not too upset‼!

Today was a smaller mileage day because one of the team, Marty has to leave tomorrow because of her job. So she had to take her bike to the bike shop in Savannah to get it shipped home (New York) and she is leaving for San Diego tomorrow morning. We will miss her ‼‼

We left Statesboro after breakfast with warm gloves and long pants on, but after a few hours we were ready to strip down cooler clothes. Most of the day we rode on a busy highway with a head wind most of the time. And it doesn’t matter how long or short the day is, it is always a welcoming sight to see that U hall trailer sitting on the side of the road. Then again around 12.30 pm Dave was waiting for us with a wonderful picnic lunch. By this time we had only 20 miles left to go for the day. So we took our time eating on a church lawn and enjoyed lying in the sun for a while. After that, back on the bike….. As I was riding and enjoying my day while peddling, I was thinking about what I had learned in the last 5 days, things like:

  • All roads lead to Rome, BUT they are not always paved…..
  • Good pace lines really work, especially when you’re at the back ,ha ha (O.K. I am doing my share at the front too)
  • How important it is to be with a group, and have each others support.
  • Put sunblock on your lips on day 1, not day 3, ouch
  • That in the north you will see a sign with the name of a river when you cross a bridge, and in the south you see a sign with the name of the bridge
  • That I am really ready for next year’s trip
  • These are a few of the things I learned in the first 5 days and I’m sure I will learn lots more in the next 5 days We are staying in downtown Savannah and after a good dinner we had to say our goodbye’s to Marty who has to leave early in the morning for the airport
