Ride de Hyde - December 6th

I'll keep updating this journal as I get ready for my big trip next year.

DAY 10 31 MILES TOTAL MILES 642

It is hard to believe that today was the last day riding of our trip. The plan for today was 69 miles but after some discussions it was decided that we would go no further than St. Augustine. Mostly due to the fact that we had a 19 hour ride home and planned on doing 7½ of those right after we finished biking. So off we were on our way to ST. Augustine. The weather as usual was perfect and the wind behind us. And today I really had that feeling that from North to South everything is downhill…… The scenery was just wonderful, lots of palm trees and we were all the time very close to the ocean. The only thing between us and the ocean were 10 million dollar homes. But the owners were kind enough to leave enough space in between the houses that we could see the water.

We also rode by parks where we had full view of the ocean. We got to St. Augustine in no time at all (with that north /south downhill, and the tailwind‼) Got our end group picture taken,( see picture) loaded the bikes in the car and the “Ride de Hyde leg #4 had officially come to an end, so we went to lunch. For now I will say goodbye Atlantic this bike, flag, and myself will see you again on May 2nd.

After lunch we started our drive to Anderson, South Carolina to spend the night with Melissa’s Cousin. We enjoyed some very nice southern hospitality at Judy and Cal’s. We got bed to rest our tired bodies and a wonderful breakfast early in the morning, so we could start our 11½ drive home. Thanks again Judy and Cal. After the first 5 days I told you what I had learned by then, Let see what else I can add to that:

  • It is always a surprise what you’re going to see and experience the next day
  • That in the south you often see cleanup crews of inmates. (we saw a lot of them)
  • Just because you go south or ride by swamps, does not mean you are going to see an alligator.
  • The jingle that we woke up to every morning at 6.30 am from Dave’s blackberry, I can’t get out of my head
  • That a bikers tan is really not that attractive
  • That, Petra you are right I really do laugh about my own jokes!

All in all it has been a wonderful bike trip and I’m really ready for the start of my cross country on March 6th and I hope that y’all will follow my journal next year too. (Amazing how quickly one picks up a southern accent)

By the way, Doug there really is a pig in the picture with Mary and the goats……….
